On 24th July, Sciencewise brought together policy makers, researchers and NGOs working on the future of mobility to explore where citizen voices would add value to policy making.
This online roundtable event was framed within the context of Covid-19 and the target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The discussions were fascinating and wide ranging, with each thread of the conversation connecting to others, and ultimately to the overarching question of what kind of future we want to live in, and how different approaches towards mobility might take us towards or away from that future.
The roundtable identified eight topics on which citizen engagement and public dialogue would add value to policy thinking, development and decisions:
Attendees discussed who should be involved in citizen engagement on the future of mobility and how processes should be designed to ensure their effectiveness. They emphasized the importance of bringing together diverse and representative groups of citizens; of ensuring engagement is meaningful and has impact; and the need for engagement at both local and national levels.
The Sciencewise team is keen to explore with policy makers and other stakeholders the potential for public dialogue in one or more of the eight topics identified at the roundtable.
